HAND AND WRIST

HAND AND WRIST

Hand and wrist conditions are common and can have a significant impact on daily activities. Here are some of the typical issues, along with their causes, symptoms, and treatments:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: This condition occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed. It can be caused by repetitive hand movements, wrist fractures, arthritis, or other medical conditions. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, pain in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger, as well as weakness and difficulty gripping objects. Treatments include resting the hand, using wrist splints, pain medications, corticosteroid injections, physical therapy, and, in severe cases, surgery.

  • De Quervain’s Tenosynovitis: Inflammation of the tendons in the thumb and wrist, typically caused by overuse or repetitive thumb movements. Symptoms include pain, tenderness at the base of the thumb, swelling, and difficulty gripping or pinching objects. Treatments include rest, avoiding repetitive thumb movements, applying ice, pain medications, splinting the thumb and wrist, corticosteroid injections, and, in severe cases, surgery.

  • Trigger Finger (Stenosing Tenosynovitis): Inflammation and thickening of the tendons in the fingers, leading to difficulties in finger movement. Symptoms include the finger getting stuck in a bent position, snapping or popping when straightened, and pain and tenderness at the base of the affected finger. Treatments include rest, avoiding repetitive finger movements, splinting the affected finger, corticosteroid injections, and, in severe cases, surgery to release the affected tendon sheath.

  • Ganglion Cysts: Non-cancerous cysts that form on or around tendons or joints in the hand or wrist. Symptoms include a soft, round lump under the skin that is usually painless but may cause discomfort if pressing on a nerve. Treatments include observation, aspiration, or surgical removal.

  • Wrist Sprains and Fractures: These occur due to sudden impact, falls, or excessive force on the wrist, resulting in ligament injuries or bone breaks. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and limited wrist movement. Treatments include rest, ice/heat therapy, immobilization with a splint or cast, pain medications, and physical therapy. Severe fractures may require surgical intervention.

  • Arthritis (Osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis): Degeneration of joint cartilage (osteoarthritis) or autoimmune response (rheumatoid arthritis) can cause joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion in the hand and wrist. Treatments include pain management with medications, physical or occupational therapy, splints, corticosteroid injections, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (for rheumatoid arthritis), and, in severe cases, surgery.
